Hernia surgery repairs weaknesses in the abdominal wall. The laparoscopic (keyhole) approach is the modern standard, offering minimal incisions, low complication rates and rapid recovery.
Pre-operative Preparation
Your surgeon will perform a thorough examination and arrange imaging studies. Blood tests and ultrasonography or CT scanning may be planned. You will need to fast for 6–8 hours before surgery.
The Procedure
Laparoscopic hernia repair typically takes 45–90 minutes under general anaesthesia. Three to four small incisions allow the camera and instruments to be inserted. The hernia sac is reduced and reinforced with a mesh.
Recovery
Most patients are discharged the same day or the following day. Return to desk work is typically possible within 1–2 weeks. Heavy physical activity should be avoided for 4–6 weeks.
