Nutrition in the pre- and post-operative period significantly influences the recovery process. Adequate protein, vitamin and mineral intake accelerates wound healing and reduces complication risk.
Pre-operative Nutrition
- Adequate protein intake (1–1.5 g/kg/day)
- Vitamin C: supports wound healing
- Zinc: strengthens the immune system
- Alcohol and smoking: should be stopped at least 2 weeks before surgery
Post-operative Nutrition
- Early oral feeding: should be commenced as soon as possible
- High-protein foods: meat, eggs, legumes
- Generous fluid intake: prevents constipation
